The house is situated in a residential character area of an inner-Brisbane suburb with two street frontages. The 300sqm site is a Brisbane City Council Heritage-listed place containing a four-room19th century worker’s cottage with a separate kitchen outbuilding.
The brief was to provide a larger home to support a young, growing family while retaining the heritage-listed house. The final proposal involved raising the existing structure and the addition of a separate three storey extension connected with a bridge link to the existing house. The design was to be contemporary in nature but still compatible with the character housing of the suburb. A secondary entry from the side street was provided through the extension linking through to the existing house.
The final design provided an improved use and enjoyment of the verandahs,
a double-garaged dwelling with 5 bedrooms plus an ensuite for the master
bedroom, a modern kitchen within the existing kitchen building, living
room and dining room, a main bathroom, two powder rooms, laundry, a
rumpus/award-winning media room, small lap pool and a grassed backyard.
The extension features a surround of aluminium louvres to protect against
the western sun while still allowing views, daylight and ventilation
to the rooms behind.
